Best Musical Performances and Broadway Treasures

I’m off to the wilds of Maryland, to school my younger cousins in the ways of the Nintendo for a week (read: family reunion). I will have limited internet access… like that’s going to stop me. Just a heads up

Here are some televised performances from the musicals Tony nominated for Best Musical.

Kerry Butler and Cheyenne Jackson from Xanadu perform “Suddenly” on The View
.

James Synder and the male ensemble from Cry-Baby perform “A Little Upset” on the Today Show.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Karen Olivio, Robin De Jesus and ensemble from In The Heights perform “It Won’t Be Long Now” on Good Morning America. If you’ve ever seen CAMP, Robin De Jesus was the teenage drag queen in that movie.

The cast of Passing Strange perform a medley on The View.

Make sure to check out PBS today- they’re airing all three volumes of Broadway Treasures. Broadway Treasures is a compilation of performances at the Tony Awards through the ages. The first volume contained Angela Lansbury performing “The Worst Pies in London” from Sweeney Todd (forget Helena Bonham Carter and the minimalist revivals- Lansbury is Mrs. Lovett), Zero Mostel performing “If I Were A Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof, and Yul Brynner performing “Shall We Dance” from The King and I with an actress whose name I can’t remember. It’s not Gertrude Lawrence, the original Anna, though. In any case, all three volumes adds up to six hours of Tony Awards performances.

And of course, don’t miss the Tony Awards themselves- Sunday, CBS, 8:00 to 11:00 PM (but award shows always run long).

  1. After watching the Tony’s last night I must say that I REALLY would like to see South Pacific and August:Osage County. I understand you can’t get a ticket to SP, but I imagine the run will be extended after last night’s overwhelming success. In The Heights did NOTHING for me and I don’t think I could sit through 2 hours of it, but if it looked good to you guys maybe you should consider seeing it in Sept. 39 Steps looked amazing. . . . .4 actors playing 40 something characters. . . .awesome. . . .if last night was any indication I can see why Little Mermaid is a flop. . . .what was up with Marissa Tomei????????? Hope you guys are having a good summer. Clare. . .AWESOME job with the website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m VERY impressed.
