MTV To Remake Rocky Horror Picture Show

…wait, what?

“Variety reports that Lou Adler, the executive producer of the 1975 film, will partner with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios for the new film, which will utilize the original Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien screenplay. Additional music may be added to the remake.

No director or casting have been announced for the MTV telepic.

Adler told Variety, “I’d like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that’s up to MTV.”

Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun will executive produce the film, and Fox is currently in discussions with BSkyB and Sky Movies to help finance the film and distribute the product abroad.”

A “telepic”, huh?

I’ve never seen any incarnation of Rocky Horror, personally, so I have little to no feelings on the subject- beyond “I wonder if Tim Curry will cameo.”

I’m more interested in the fact that MTV is getting involved in musical theatre- albeit pieces that appeal to their audience. They’ve televised Legally Blonde, and need I mention the reality show that cast the next Elle Woods in Legally Blonde? I’m very pleased to see that they’re continuing in that vein.

The last American production of Rocky Horror was 2000-2002, and notable cast remembers include Joan Jett and Daphne Rubin-Vega of RENT fame. In its last year, the narrator was played by Penn & Teller and Jerry Springer, among others. It was nominated for four Tony Awards.

I think the “telepic” might have a lot in common with that last American run- although I wouldn’t be surprised if some people were plucked from the more recent UK tour production.
